The soothing warm waters, rich in minerals, are not only incredibly relaxing but also offer therapeutic benefits, making them a perfect retreat for both the body and mind.

The hot springs in La Fortuna vary from luxurious resorts with multiple pools, waterfalls, and beautifully landscaped gardens to more rustic, natural river settings where you can immerse yourself in unaltered pools and river beds. 

 

Free Hot Springs

For those looking to enjoy the natural hot springs without spending a dime, the free hot springs near the Tabacón Resort area offer a perfect solution. These springs, often referred to as the "El Choyin" or "Tabacóncito" hot springs are situated alongside a river that runs parallel to the road. Visitors can relax in the warm, flowing waters surrounded by lush jungle, providing an authentic and raw connection to nature. These hot springs can be found on Google Maps. Parking is free along the main road but you may encounter parking guards who look to charge for watching your car. While you don't have to pay these guards, supporting their cause with a donation of your choosing is a good way to avoid confrontation and support locals in need.   ​​

​Paid Hot Springs

For a more structured experience, several paid hot springs facilities are available. EcoTermales is known for its intimate and serene setting with a limited number of guests allowed each day, ensuring a peaceful and uncrowded experience. Baldi Hot Springs is another one of the most popular choices, boasting over 25 thermal pools of varying temperatures, and surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. The facility also includes waterslides, swim-up bars, and a variety of dining options, making it ideal for families and groups. These paid hot springs often provide amenities such as changing rooms, lockers, and on-site dining, adding to the convenience and comfort of your visit.

For the ultimate relaxation and luxury, consider staying at one of the hotels or resorts featuring private hot springs. The area around El Salto also offers some informal trails that are free to explore. These paths wind through the forest and along the river, providing a peaceful setting for a leisurely hike. Find a hike near Volcan Arenal

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park ($32-$100)

One of the top destinations for hikers is the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. This private reserve features a well-maintained network of trails and hanging bridges that allow visitors to walk through the rainforest canopy, providing a unique vantage point to observe the area's rich biodiversity. The trails here are suitable for all levels of hikers and offer breathtaking views of the Arenal Volcano and the surrounding forests.

El Silencio Reserve provides a more tranquil and intimate hiking experience. This private reserve offers a series of well-marked trails that meander through primary and secondary rainforests, past volcanic rocks, and to lookout points with impressive views of the Arenal Volcano. The trails are relatively easy, making them accessible to hikers of all skill levels.

​Arenal Observatory Lodge Trails ($18)

Although staying at the Arenal Observatory Lodge requires a booking, the lodge offers non-guests access to its extensive network of trails for a modest fee for a day pass ($18). They have an 870-acre property uniquely located right between Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, where you can explore rainforests, waterfalls, streams, and 11 kilometers of trails. Don't miss visiting "the nest" a staircase built of scaffolding that elevates you above the treeline where you get an incredible view of the volcano, lake Arenal, and the surrounding jungle. 

Arenal 1968 Volcán : Sendero Bosque

Explore this 4.7-kilometer loop near San Ramón in the Province of Alajuela. This route is moderately challenging and typically takes about 1 hour and 24 minutes to complete. It's well-known for birdwatching and hiking, so expect to encounter fellow enthusiasts. The optimal months to enjoy this trail are from November through August. Please note that dogs are prohibited.

Arenal 1968 Volcán : Sendero Bosque

Explore this 4.7-kilometer loop near San Ramón in the Province of Alajuela. This route is moderately challenging and typically takes about 1 hour and 24 minutes to complete. Visit Parque National Volcán Tenorio or Rio Celeste

  • You can not swim in Rio Celeste within the National Park. 

  • There is an area 1 mile before the National Park where you can enjoy Rio Celeste for free and swim in the river!

How to get to La Fortuna?

 

Best International Airport to Fly Into

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José is the best international airport to fly into. It's the largest and busiest airport in Costa Rica, with numerous international flights and services. Alternatively, Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia is another option, especially if you're planning to explore the northern part of Costa Rica.

Best Domestic Airport to Fly Into

While there isn't a domestic airport in La Fortuna itself, the nearest domestic airport is La Fortuna Arenal Airport (FON). However, it primarily serves charter flights and small planes. For more frequent domestic flights, you can fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) or Tobías Bolaños International Airport (SYQ) in San José and then travel by road.

Main Connecting Highways for Driving from the Airport

From San José (SJO):

  1. Take Route 1 (Interamericana Norte) north.

  2. Merge onto Route 702 at San Ramón.

  3. Follow Route 702 directly to La Fortuna.

From Liberia (LIR):

  1. Take Route 1 south.

  2. Turn left onto Route 142 at Cañas.

  3. Continue on Route 142 past Tilarán, through Nuevo Arenal, and directly to La Fortuna.

Is 4x4 Recommended?

A 4x4 is not strictly necessary, especially if you're traveling during the dry season and sticking to main roads. However, during the rainy season, or if you plan to explore off-the-beaten-path attractions, a 4x4 vehicle can be very useful due to potential mud and rough terrain.

Private Shuttles Available

Yes, there are several private shuttle services available to La Fortuna. Companies such as Interbus, Gray Line, and private tour operators offer shuttle services from both San José and Liberia airports. These shuttles can be booked in advance and provide a comfortable and stress-free way to travel.

How to get around in La Fortuna?

 

Bicycles and Scooters

For those who enjoy a bit of adventure and exercise, renting a bicycle or scooter is a fun way to get around La Fortuna. Bicycles are ideal for exploring the town and nearby attractions at a leisurely pace, while scooters offer a faster and more exhilarating option. Several rental shops in La Fortuna provide bikes and scooters at reasonable rates.

 

Public Buses

Public buses are the most economical way to travel in and around La Fortuna. The town has a well-connected bus system with regular routes to San José, Tilarán, and other nearby towns. While buses are slower and less comfortable than private shuttles, they offer a great way to experience local life and meet other travelers.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available in La Fortuna and are a reliable option for short trips around town or to nearby attractions. They can be hailed on the street, found at taxi stands, or booked through your hotel. Ensure the taxi driver uses the meter or agree on a fare beforehand.

Where to go after La Fortuna?

 

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Why Go: This Caribbean coastal town is renowned for its laid-back vibe, Afro-Caribbean culture, and stunning beaches. It's an ideal destination for relaxation, surfing, and exploring local culture. While it’s not close to La Fortuna, there's a direct route connecting the two, making it convenient for those wanting to experience Costa Rica's Caribbean side.

Activities: Cahuita National Park and coral reefs, Punta Uva and Playa Cocles beaches, Jaguar Rescue Center, Vibrant nightlife and local cuisine

Tortuguero National Park

Why Go: Known as the “Amazon of Costa Rica,” Tortuguero offers a network of canals and lush rainforests, making it an excellent destination for eco-tourism and wildlife watching. While it’s not close to La Fortuna, there's a direct route connecting the two, making it convenient for those wanting to experience Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast. 

Activities: Turtle nesting tours (seasonal), boat tours through the canals, guided hikes and wildlife spotting, visit the Sea Turtle Conservancy
