Visit the Ostional Wildlife Refuge to witness the incredible "arribadas"
GOOD TO KNOW
-
Best time of year to see these "arribadas" is August through December.
-
Turtles prefer to nest in the dark so it’s best to go during the waxing crescent moon or right after the new moon when it is the darkest.
-
The best time to see turtles in Ostional is during sunset around 5 PM and early morning around 5 AM. It’s common for babies to hatch early in the morning.
The Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica was established in 1984 to protect a crucial nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles. The Reserve extends 15 km along the shoreline, including the beaches of Ostional, Nosara, and Guiones. Olive ridley sea turtles, along with their close relatives, Kemp’s sea turtles, are unique in their synchronized mass nesting events known as "arribadas." Before these mass nestings, known as "flotillas," a growing number of turtles gather offshore. Then, triggered by an unknown signal, the arribada begins. Initially, a few hundred turtles come ashore, followed by a continuous stream for three to seven days.
Turtles nest at Ostional year-round, with peak nesting during the rainy season from August to December, when arribadas occur regularly, sometimes even twice a month. During this time, hundreds of thousands of turtles come to nest, compared to tens of thousands during the dry season. These arribadas usually happen on the darkest nights, a few days before the new moon, mostly between 8 pm and 4 am. Typically, turtles ride the high tide at night, but during an arribada, they start arriving soon after sunset and continue until early morning.
At night, when there is an arribada, you must check in with the ranger booth at the southern end of Ostional where you pay the entrance fee of $ 10. No flashlights or flash photography is permitted.
