Known for its unspoiled beaches, lush rainforests, and the iconic whale-tail-shaped sandbar of Marino Ballena National Park, Uvita perfectly blends natural beauty with vibrant biodiversity. The area is famous for Envision, one of my favorite music and art festivals, and features some of Costa Rica’s best hidden river and waterfall spots. My favorite activity in Uvita is exploring its stunning rivers and waterfalls. The rivers here are crystal-clear, turquoise, and wonderfully cool. Uvita offers various rivers and hidden waterfall pools—some accessible by foot from the town center, while others require a 4x4 vehicle. For safety, consider joining a full-day waterfall tour, but if you're adventurous, you can explore on your own. Just be cautious, as the waterfalls can be very slippery and dangerous, especially during the rainy season. Here are a few of my favorite river spots in Uvita:
Uvita Waterfall ($5)
The Uvita Waterfall, easily accessible from the town center, is a charming natural retreat where visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear pool at the base of the falls. The waterfall features multiple cliff-jumping platforms as well as a natural rock slide that adds a fun, adventurous twist to your visit. Surrounded by lush vegetation, this picturesque spot is perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. The restaurant's entrance will charge you $5 but gives you access to their man-made platforms that make it easy to navigate and cliff jump.
Bamboo river (free)
Tucked away in a serene bamboo forest, the Bamboo River is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The tranquil setting, coupled with the soothing sound of cascading water, creates a peaceful atmosphere ideal for a quiet escape. This secluded spot offers a unique and intimate experience, making it a favorite for those looking to enjoy nature’s beauty in solitude.
El Pavon (free)
El Pavon Waterfall is a captivating natural wonder where a powerful stream flows through a giant boulder, creating a unique and picturesque cascade. Located in the heart of the jungle, this waterfall is perfect for a day of adventure, allowing visitors to swim in the cool waters and explore the surrounding flora and fauna. El Pavon’s striking landscape makes it a must-see for nature enthusiasts.
Pozo Azul Waterfall (free)
Pozo Azul Waterfall, known for its strikingly blue waters, is an idyllic spot for swimming and relaxing. Nestled in a lush forest, the waterfall flows into a large, inviting pool that’s perfect for cooling off after a hike. The pristine environment and vibrant blue hues of Pozo Azul make it a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Hidden Waterfall and Natural Pools (free)
You will find this gorgeous hidden waterfall and natural pools just a bit further outside the town of Uvita. This spot is best to visit in the rainy season when there is more water and bigger swimming pools. Getting to this spot requires crossing the river on foot or in a 4x4. The river crossing is a good place to park if you don't want to cross with a car.

Explore Marino Ballena National Park
Marino Ballena National Park, located in Uvita, Costa Rica, is a stunning marine sanctuary renowned for its unique whale-tail shaped sandbar and rich biodiversity. Established in 1989, the park covers over 13,000 acres of ocean and 9 miles of coastline, providing a vital habitat for a wide array of marine life, including humpback whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. The park's main attraction is the seasonal migration of humpback whales, which can be observed between August through November. Visitors can also explore the vibrant coral reefs, pristine beaches, and lush mangroves, making it a haven for snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking.

Visit Nauyaca Waterfalls
Nauyaca is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Costa Rica and should be a stop on anyone’s list when visiting Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast. Our Nauyaca Waterfall tour includes a nice hike to the top tier of this epic 150 ft waterfall, which will then reward you with a refreshing swim in the pool beneath the lower falls. How to get to Uvita?
Best International Airport to Fly Into
The closest and most convenient international airport for reaching Uvita is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), located in San José. This airport offers various international flights from North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. From SJO, it takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by car to reach Uvita.
Alternative Option: Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia is another option, but it’s further from Uvita, requiring a 5 to 6-hour drive. This option is ideal if you visit Guanacaste before heading to Uvita.
Best Domestic Airport to Fly Into
For travelers already in Costa Rica, the nearest domestic airport to Uvita is Palmar Sur Airport (PMZ), located about an hour's drive south of Uvita. Sansa Airlines offers direct domestic flights from San José to Palmar Sur, saving you time compared to driving.
Tip: The flight from San José to Palmar Sur is only about 45 minutes and provides stunning aerial views of Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes.
Main Connecting Highways for Driving from the Airport
From San José (SJO):
Take Route 27 (Autopista del Sol), heading west towards Orotina, then connect to Route 34 (Costanera Sur), which takes you directly down the Pacific coast to Uvita. This route offers scenic ocean views and well-paved roads.
From Liberia (LIR):
Travel south on Route 1 (Interamericana Norte), then connect to Route 18. From there, merge onto Route 27 and finally Route 34, leading you to Uvita. It’s a longer drive, but it takes you through Costa Rica’s beautiful countryside.
Is 4x4 Recommended?
While 4x4 vehicles are not strictly necessary when traveling to Uvita on the main roads, they are highly recommended during the rainy season (May to November). The region’s rural roads can become muddy or rough, especially if you plan to visit more remote locations, like hidden beaches or waterfalls. A standard vehicle will suffice if you’re traveling during the dry season (December to April) and sticking to the main roads.

Public buses are available in Uvita, connecting the town to nearby destinations such as Dominical, Ojochal, and San Isidro. While these buses are inexpensive, they may not be the most convenient option for travelers looking to explore more remote attractions or travel on a tight schedule. Buses run along the Costanera Highway (Route 34), making stops in central locations.
